The Gender of Violence Assignment

The Gender of Violence Assignment

Q This unit contains materials that are (for many of us) very emotionally difficult to work through. Why do you think it is important for women historians to read and analyze these kinds of sources?Based on the article you chose to read (either Thavolia Glymph or Sharon Block), compare (i.e. how are they alike) and contrast (i.e. how are they different), the women's experiences with violence. This includes free/white women, enslaved women, and servant women. (A chart would be an excellent way to organize this information. There is a table tool under the "insert" menu above.)

Writers write about the most dramatic and heartbreaking human events as historians, yet we often de-emotionalize our topics. Our noble drive for objectivity, our adherence to verifiable claims, our dependence on often dry archive materials, and perhaps even our desire to be regarded seriously in academia all serve to stifle more vivid writing. This, however, does not have to be the case. We can preserve our commitment to academic rigor while yet writing with emotion.
